Parents and caregivers are invited to learn from our clinical team, ask questions, and explore practical strategies that can support your children at home and in the community.
Each series focuses on a specific topic and is designed to provide families with useful information they can apply in everyday life.
Current Series: Understanding AAC
Augmentative and alternative communication, commonly called AAC, includes tools and strategies that help individuals communicate.
This three-part series is designed for parents and caregivers whose children currently use AAC, as well as families who are just beginning to explore whether AAC may be appropriate for their child. Sessions will combine education, real-life examples, opportunities to explore different AAC tools, and time for questions.
Session One:
Introduction to AAC
Date: September 1, 2026
Time: 5:30 p.m.
Length: 45 minutes
Location: Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development
Learn what AAC is, explore low-tech and high-tech communication options, and discover how clinicians help determine which tools may best support a child.
Topics will include:
- Common features across speech-generating devices
- Core vocabulary and language layouts
- Modeling communication
- Ways to begin using AAC without overwhelming your child or family
Session Two:
AAC at Home and During Daily Routines
Date: October 2, 2026
Time: 5:30 p.m.
Length: 30 minutes
Location: Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development
Discover ways to incorporate AAC into routines your family already follows, from getting ready in the morning to meals, playtime, school, and bedtime.
Families will learn how to identify useful vocabulary, model communication throughout the day, and gradually expand AAC use across activities.
Session Three:
AAC in the Community
Date: November 3, 2026
Time: 5:30 p.m.
Length: 30 minutes
Location: Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development
Learn how to support communication outside the home during trips to stores, appointments, pools, playgrounds, family gatherings, and other community activities.
This session will also explore how AAC can be balanced with sensory, movement, and accessibility needs while families are out and about.
