Lancaster Catholic golfers raise more than $10,000 for Schreiber

Richard and Will Riva, a senior and sophomore, respectively, at Lancaster Catholic, were kicking around ideas with their dad, Rich, about how Catholic’s golf team could do something to benefit the community.
The Rivas had supported Schreiber Pediatric Rehab Center previously, so one of the Rivas blurted out: “How about Birdies for Schreiber?” They wanted to collect money for every birdie the team made through the fall season.
A fundraiser was born.
They took the idea to Catholic golf coach Jay Filling, who was all in right away, and he and the Rivas and the rest of the team went out and began looking for donors. With the talented group collecting a bunch of birdies and plenty of pledges, the team was able to collect more than $10,000 for Schreiber.
“We didn’t think it would be that much,” the younger Richard Riva said. “But everyone we emailed was very generous. People know about the work Schreiber does, so they wanted to help.”
The team and the coach said the effort didn’t start until they were already into the season, and they were already talking about doing something again for Schreiber next year.
“I could definitely see doing this again next year with our team and maybe seeing if we can take this to other teams and having an even bigger impact,” Filling said.
