Homestead Village Residents Support Local Children with Mother’s Day Project

(LANCASTER, Pa) – Residents of the Homestead Village Retirement Community, Lancaster, will make Mother’s Day a little more special for the mothers and grandmothers of children served by the Schreiber Pediatric Rehab Center. Through residents’ generosity, children will have the opportunity to select a piece of costume jewelry at no cost to offer as a gift through a project called “Mother’s Day Jewelry Shop.”

On May 8, children served by the Center can visit a special gift shop at the Center set up by the Homestead Residents’ Council which is coordinating the project. Children can make their selection from donated costume jewelry, then have their gift wrapped and prepared by volunteers, ready to be given to the special woman in their lives.

The effort is being headed by Barbara Butzer, president of the Residents’ Council. Mrs. Butzer said, “We have many eager volunteers and we’ve had a really nice response to the request for jewelry. We have some very, very pretty items for the children.” She is especially pleased to partner with Schreiber, which is part of the campus surrounding Homestead Village. She added, “We’ll have a lot of fun, and we think it is good to go outside Homestead and do something for the community.”

Mrs. Butzer learned of this project from her daughter who coordinates a similar program in Rochester, NY, serving several grades in an elementary school. The proposal was well-received by both the Council and the staff at Schreiber. They are expecting between 100 and 125 children to take advantage of the gift shop.
