Updated, March 27

As we all try to manage our daily lives during the COVID-19 crisis, Schreiber continues to monitor the evolving situation. Since we are at the end of our decision to close until March 27, we wanted to update you on what has happened this week and what comes next for Schreiber.

Schreiber will operate with limited services until further notice. On March 27, Gov. Wolf issued stay-at-home orders to nine additional counties, including Lancaster, York and Berks counties. Given the travel restrictions associated with the order and the ongoing need to avoid gatherings in public places, Schreiber is unable to offer our center-based services at this time. We will continue to evaluate this and will continue to follow the guidance of state and local public health officials.

Schreiber has implemented a first round of furloughs. WIth revenue down due to limited services and fundraising events on hold, Schreiber has made the painful decision to furlough 30 staff members. The furloughs extended to all departments, including therapists and teachers. We hope the furloughs will be brief and that all staff members can be back working with children at Schreiber as soon as possible.

Schreiber moved up our annual Phonathon as an emergency fundraising effort. When we closed the center, postponed Gala and saw other fundraising events put on hold, we moved Phonathon from May to right now. We will be contacting every individual and business in our database, first with an urgent appeal letter (some of you might have already received it), then with phone calls on April 19-21. If you want to help now, you can make a donation by using the donate form below.

March 24

LNP/Lancaster Online published a story about the difficult financial situation Schreiber is facing as a result of being closed. Highlights:

  • Schreiber has notified employees that 30 staff members, including therapists, educators and support staff -- about 38 percent of the total staff -- have been furloughed.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf has directed the state's K-12 schools to remain closed until April 6. This will include Schreiber's S.T.A.R.S. Preschool.

Schreiber's Circle of Friends Academy will also follow the lead of the state's schools and remain closed through April 6.

March 16

Following our decision to voluntary close this week due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Schreiber faces an unprecedented challenge. We will be closed from March 17-27, with plans to re-open Monday, March 30, if conditions allow.

Each day we're closed means another day of not providing therapy services to kids. It also means we are not receiving payments for those services. In addition, we have already postponed one fundraising event, and more are at risk. There is literally no money coming in. A shutdown lasting more than a few weeks will be catastrophic.

We need your help, and we need it right now. Unless we start to receive significant philanthropic support in the days and weeks ahead, Schreiber's ability to stay open will be at risk.

Please use the form below to make a donation to Schreiber. We have survived many difficult days in our 84 years, thanks to the generous support of many thousands of people like you. With your help today, we will survive this, too. Please give as generously as you can.
