A season of giving, and of giving thanks

December is a time for us to gather with family and friends to exchange gifts. Here at Schreiber, we have been blessed with some remarkable generosity that will warm our hearts as we move into our 80th anniversary year of 2016.

Doreen Snyder, who operates Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home with her husband Charles, organized a party this month and asked guests to bring items from our Wish List. She ended up collecting dozens of much-needed toys, craft materials and other supplies for our therapy and educational programs.

Employees at Conestoga Wood Specialties donated a room full of wrapped presents that we delivered to Schreiber families so that they could have a little more under their trees on Christmas morning.

LCBC, the Lancaster County church, has supplied us with volunteers here at the Center and at our special events throughout the year. This week, one of their families dropped off a $7,500 check. Last year, they donated $25,000 that helped us buy 25,000 new rubber duckies for our Duckie Race.

ModernEYES Optical held an Ugly Sweater Contest among its employees. The top three vote getters were able to designate prize money to the charity of their choice, and ModernEYES' Kim Rineer finished third and selected Schreiber to receive her $1,000 prize.

We received more support this year from the Viktor Yeliohin International Ballet Academy, who raised nearly $1,000 for us with their performances of "The Nutcracker." And Iron Hill Brewery's Give 20 Day raised another $300.

All of that was on the heels of the Extraordinary Give, which produced about $70,000 for us in November.

For all of these gifts, and the many others we received this year, we just wanted to again say thank you. Schreiber would not be here, providing the much-needed therapy services to thousands of kids each year, without your support. You make it possible to do what we do every day.

And if you have any doubt that what we do changes lives, consider this note I received this week from Kristen Eshelmen through our Facebook page. Here's a portion:

"Our son Sam was born 12 weeks premature in March 1998. He'd sustained what should've been lethal brain damage from a bilateral hemorrhage, and had all kinds of complications from his early birth. ... For the first two years of his life our Sam received pretty much every kind of rehab therapy Schreiber's offered, and today he is a healthy, functioning and just plain incredible young man planning on going to college next fall to major in photography and minor in meteorology."

Notes like that make all the hard work worthwhile.

Merry Christmas from all of us here at Schreiber.
