Changes bring start of new era

Posted by Dan  Permalink

Some of you probably already know that what we call Schreiber today has been around since 1936. In those 82 years, we have gone by several different names: The Society for Crippled Children and Adults, the National Easter Seals Society and, starting in 1994, Schreiber Pediatric Rehab Center of Lancaster County.

Now, we are excited to tell you about our new name and introduce our new logo.

The Brenneman boys are all Schreiber boys

Posted by Dan  Permalink

Danielle Brenneman's first son Miles was born with cerebral palsy. He received services from Schreiber starting with early intervention home visits from Schreiber Physical Therapist Kristie Schroeder when he was 6 months old, and began at Schreiber's S.T.A.R.S. Preschool when he was 3. Dani was so happy with all of her experiences, she sent two more boys -- Levi and Issac, both typically developing -- to Schreiber, too.

Anthony Melendez's new look

Posted by Dan  Permalink

Anthony Menendez has been a Schreiber kiddo since he was a year old. For all of his time here, he has been a happy, energetic presence, in our S.T.A.R.S. preschool and during therapy visits. He even spent a year as a Schreiber Ambassador, attending our annual Gala and other fundraising events.

He managed all of that despite being born with serious physical challenges, including chronic lung disease and having several of his internal organs located in a sac outside his body.

'Amazing little guy' learning to play with friends

Posted by Dan  Permalink

LJ Hamer, a 5-year-old Schreiber kiddo, chatted noisily next to his grandmother as they waited for a speech therapy session to begin. Sometimes his speech slipped into hard-to-understand phrases or didn't-make-sense chatter, but the smile never left his face.

There are so many great things occurring every day at Schreiber that it can sometimes be hard to step back and take stock of what's happening in the bigger picture.
When we do that, though, we can tell you: The bigger picture looks pretty good, too.

Matt Woods: Training with a purpose

Sometimes, Matt Woods wonders why he took up competing in triathlons. The miles and miles of running, biking and swimming can be grueling. An aspiring actor with Down syndrome

When I saw that Alex Johanning wanted to be an actor when he grew up, I was intrigued. Alex has Down syndrome, and there aren't many professional actors with Down syndrome, that I know of. (Of course, I didn't know about this.) I wanted to find out more, so I watched Alex during one of his acting classes at the Fulton Theatre and talked to his mom, Lisa.

THON starts today at Penn State

The Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, commonly known as THON, begins today in State College. The annual 46-hour dance marathon is billed as the largest student-run philanthropy in the world, and it raises money and awareness for the fight agaist pediatric cancer, according to thon.org, the official dance marathon website.

The money raised at THON -- it amounts to $114 million since 1977 -- benefits the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital. The Fund provides direct support for children with cancer and their families.

Schreiber has a connection to this extraordinary philanthropic effort.
