OUR HISTORY
The Schreiber Pediatric Rehab formerly the Easter Seal Society of Lancaster County, has provided services to children and adults with disabilities since 1936. The organization, originally known as the Society For Crippled
Children and Adults, was formed by Edna F. Schreiber and other concerned community members. During the 1930's when many local residents contracted polio, Ms. Schreiber assisted at a brace clinic. At this time, the Rotary Club of Lancaster brought an orthopedic surgeon to Lancaster several times a year to treat and prescribe braces for those children crippled by polio. In 1936, Ms. Schreiber became the first executive director of the new organization.
The organization affiliated with the Pennsylvania Easter Seal Society in 1947, and continued to expand to meet the growing needs of the Lancaster community. Ms. Schreiber retired in 1967 after three decades devoted to working with people with special needs.
During the late 1980's, the organization focused its efforts on specialized pediatric therapy services and preschool programs for infants, children and adolescents with developmental delays and physical disabilities. In October 1994, the organization disaffiliated from the Pennsylvania and National Easter Seal Societies in an effort to maintain local autonomy over its programs and resources, ensuring that children with disabilities in the Lancaster County area would receive the highest quality of services. In 2005, the Center launched a Capital Campaign to raise money to expand the facility by 14,000 square feet. Construction began on October 3, 2005, with an open house shortly following in June of 2006. The expansion has added the following features: on-site recreational program space, larger physical and occupational therapy gyms, a therapeutic swimming pool, activities of daily living area, and meeting areas for staff and visitors. The additions to the Center are now more effectively treating the nearly 4,000 children striving to expand their capabilities. The Schreiber Center is under the leadership of William F. Jefferson, President, and continues to offer premier pediatric rehabilitation services to help children turn their disabilities into abilities everyday.
